Early stage

CRM without HubSpot for early stage

HubSpot is a good CRM for a sales team. It is a heavy CRM for a founder who has had fourteen conversations this month. You can skip it until you have a pipeline worth inspecting.

What HubSpot is for

HubSpot, Salesforce and the other dashboard CRMs are built around a pipeline. Stages, deal amounts, required properties, reporting, a seat for every person who touches the lead. That is the right shape once you have a repeating sales motion and more than one person in it.

It is the wrong shape when you are still looking for the first customers. You do not have deals. You have threads. The work is happening on X, Product Hunt and Reddit, not in a contact record someone else filled in.

What early stage actually looks like

A useful week at this stage is specific and small:

  • You found eight people who named the problem in public.
  • You replied like a person. Three of them wrote back.
  • You have a follow-up due Thursday, and you can still see what they asked.

HubSpot will let you model that as a deal. You will spend the afternoon making the deal object honest, then skip the CRM the next time someone comments. The tool that wins is the one that is already open when the conversation is.

The cost of setting it up too soon

The usual early-stage HubSpot setup looks productive and then sits unused:

  • Pipelines with four stages and nobody in three of them.
  • Required fields you invent so the record is "complete."
  • A Chrome overlay that pushes LinkedIn into HubSpot, while your people are on Reddit.
  • A seat you do not need, for a teammate you do not have.

None of that is HubSpot being bad. It is HubSpot being asked to be a personal list. Use a personal list until the personal list is the bottleneck.

A lighter CRM in the browser

Founder CRM is a free Chrome extension for that earlier job. You describe who you want. It opens X, Product Hunt and Reddit in your own session, keeps the people who fit, and saves them on your machine. One next action per person. The side panel sits on the tab you are already on.

It does not replace HubSpot for a sales org. It is a HubSpot alternative for a founder doing their own outreach: no account, no seat, no dashboard. You type every message.

Chrome Web Store approval is coming soon. Install Founder CRM from the install page if you want it today.

More on Chrome-extension CRMs for founders if you want the category, and CRM for indie hackers if you want the audience version of the same point.

When you should go back to HubSpot

Move up when the personal list is honestly not enough:

  • Someone else needs to see the same people.
  • You have a repeating motion with stages that mean something.
  • You are forecasting, not remembering.

Until then, skip the dashboard. Keep the people next to the conversation. Come back to HubSpot when you have a sales team, not because a blog said every SaaS needs one on day one.

Questions founders ask

Is Founder CRM a HubSpot alternative?
For a founder doing their own outreach, yes. It is not a replacement for a sales team dashboard.
Can I skip HubSpot forever?
If you stay a one-person outreach motion, maybe. If you hire a sales team, you will want a dashboard CRM.
Does this sync into HubSpot?
No. The list lives in your Chrome profile. There is no cloud CRM sync.
Does it send on my behalf?
No. It finds people, files them and reminds you. You write every message.
