Outreach

Cold outreach without spam: how founders do it right

The line between cold outreach and spam is not volume or even whether the person knows you. It is specificity. Spam is copy-paste. Outreach is one message written for one person. This guide covers how to do that on Reddit, X and Product Hunt without getting banned, ignored, or hurting your own reputation.

What makes outreach feel like spam

Spam is not about whether you have a commercial intent. It is about whether the message is written for the person who received it. The failure modes are smaller than most founders expect:

  • The same sentence in twenty threads. Reddit and X users see copied-and-pasted language instantly. It reads as automated even when it was written by hand.
  • Pitching before showing you understood the problem. "Check out my tool" in response to a question you did not fully read is ignored at best, reported at worst.
  • A link in the first message. On Reddit in particular, a bare URL in a comment from a young account is the pattern that gets posts removed.
  • Asking for something before giving anything. A DM that opens with "would you like to try my product?" before establishing relevance is easy to decline and easy to mark as spam.

None of these require a bot. A solo founder sending ten messages a day can make all of them if they move too fast and stop reading carefully.

Cold outreach on Reddit

Reddit is the most structured channel for cold outreach because the public post tells you exactly what the person needs. That makes specificity easy: you already know the question.

Find a live problem, not a recap

Look for posts where the person is still watching. Titles with "looking for", "any recommendations for", or "how do I" followed by the job your product does. Sort by New in your target subreddits. The subreddit finder lists which communities your buyers already use.

Reply in the thread before the DM

A useful public comment is the warm-up. Answer the question. Give a next step they can take without you. Mention your product in one sentence only if it is the honest recommendation. If your product is not a fit, still answer.

If they respond to your comment with interest, then you can offer to answer in more depth over DM. That sequence is not cold outreach at that point. It is a conversation.

Read the subreddit rules before you post

Some subreddits allow product mentions with disclosure. Some do not allow links at all. If the rules say no promotion, answer with no URL. That is often the better outcome anyway: a useful reply from a real account with no link is more credible than the same reply with a link.

There is no auto-DM in Founder CRM. You write every reply. The safety page covers what runs in your browser and what does not.

The full Reddit outreach guide is first customers from Reddit. It covers intent signals, how to reply, and how to track follow-ups.

Cold outreach on X

X is harder to do right than Reddit because there is less context. A post on Reddit has a thread, a subreddit, and often several paragraphs. A post on X is short and moves fast. The surface for specificity is narrower.

Reply publicly first

As with Reddit, a useful public reply earns the right to a DM. Search for posts that describe the problem you solve. Reply with something specific to that post. If the person engages, the DM is not cold anymore.

DM only if their bio says DMs are open

Not everyone on X has DMs open. Check before trying. Some people have a note in their bio that says "DMs open." Some do not, and a DM that bounces back with a follow requirement is a sign to move on.

Write it for this person

Reference the post or thread. Say specifically why you think your product is relevant. One sentence. Then ask a question instead of making a pitch. A question is easier to answer than a pitch is to accept or decline.

Cold outreach on Product Hunt

Product Hunt is different from Reddit and X. The people on a launch page are there because they are interested in new products. The intent signal is the vote or the comment, not a search.

Comment first, DM second

Leave a genuine comment on a launch that is relevant to your product. If your tool helps the audience of that product, say something specific in the comments. Then, if the maker's profile shows a Message button, use it.

The message should reference the comment and the specific connection. It should not be a sales pitch. Most useful: explaining a complementary use case and asking if they have seen it come up with their users.

Upvote and comment without an agenda

Not every Product Hunt session should end in a DM. Voting and commenting on launches you genuinely liked builds a presence on the site. That presence makes your own messages more credible when you do send them.

The DM playbook for Product Hunt is the Product Hunt makers with DMs open guide. It covers who to message, what to say, and how to keep the list.

The follow-up is where most outreach fails

Cold outreach without spam does not end at the first message. The failure point for most founders is losing the person after a good first reply. They said something interesting. You said something back. Then you forgot where you put the thread.

Write down four things after each interaction:

  • Who they are, and where you found them.
  • What they said, in their words.
  • What you said back.
  • When it is worth checking in again.

A notes app works for a few people. A spreadsheet works until you stop opening it. What actually works is a reminder next to the profile while you are already in the browser. The full tracking guide is track outreach from public conversations.

Tools that help without doing it for you

The useful tools for cold outreach without spam share one property: they help you find the right person, and then they stop. They do not write the message and they do not press send.

  • Subreddit finder: type your niche, get the subreddits where buyers ask for help. Free, no signup.
  • YouTube comment lead gen: find buyers in YouTube comment sections. The free YouTube comment finder on this site filters for buyer-intent phrases. You reply yourself.
  • Find beta users: where early adopters hang out before you have a product ready to sell.
  • Founder CRM: keeps the people you found, with notes and a follow-up date. Free on the Chrome Web Store. You write every message.

Questions founders ask

What is the difference between cold outreach and spam?
Specificity. Spam is the same message sent to many people. Cold outreach is one message written for one person based on something they said or asked. On Reddit, the public post tells you exactly what the person needs. On X, their recent posts do. Use that context.
Is cold outreach on Reddit allowed?
It depends on the subreddit. Some subreddits allow product mentions with disclosure. Some do not allow links at all. Read the rules before you post. A useful reply with no link is often more credible than the same reply with one.
Should I DM people on Reddit or reply in the thread?
Reply in the thread first. A useful public comment earns the right to a DM. If someone responds to your comment with genuine interest, then you can continue in DM. Opening with a DM before any public interaction is more likely to be marked as spam.
How do I avoid getting banned on Reddit for outreach?
Three things: do not paste the same reply into multiple subreddits, do not include a link if the subreddit rules say not to, and reply to the actual question rather than pivoting immediately to your product. Build comment history in the subreddit before promoting anything.
Does Founder CRM send messages automatically?
No. Founder CRM finds people on Reddit, X and Product Hunt, keeps the list locally in Chrome, and reminds you when a follow-up is due. You write every message yourself. There is no auto-DM and no auto-send.
How many outreach messages should I send per day?
The number matters less than the quality. Ten specific, useful replies to ten real people is more effective than a hundred copy-pasted messages. Most founders who do outreach well send five to fifteen messages a day, spend time reading each thread, and write each reply fresh.
