Launch
How to launch without Product Hunt
You do not need a Product Hunt day to start talking to customers. A launch is a few weeks of honest conversations in public, written down so you can come back. The listing is optional. The people are not.
Why skip the listing day
Product Hunt is a real channel. It is also a calendar event: a hunter, a thumbnail, a day of comments from people who may never have the problem. Plenty of founders treat that day as the launch, then go quiet when the ranking drops.
If you sell to a specific kind of person, you can talk to them this week without waiting for a slot. Makers already post in public. Founders already ask for tools. That is a launch if you show up and keep the names.
What people mean by a soft launch
Search for a soft launch without Product Hunt and you will find two ideas mixed together. One is hiding: a quiet beta, a waitlist, no public URL. The other is launching in public without a listing day: talk to people who already have the problem, ship, and keep going.
The second one is a real launch. You are not pretending the product does not exist. You are skipping the one-day spike and doing the slower work that actually produces customers: replies, DMs you typed, follow-ups on a date.
Hiding has a place if the product is not ready to be used. If it is ready, go talk. Do not wait for Product Hunt to make it official.
Where to talk instead
Start where the problem is already being named:
- Reddit posts from people stuck on the job you do. The first customers from Reddit guide is the longer version of that.
- X searches and lists of founders who just shipped something next to yours.
- Communities you already belong to, if you can answer without turning every thread into a launch post.
Answer the question they asked. Mention the product only when it is the honest next step. Repeat that for a couple of weeks. That is more of a launch than a day of upvotes from people who will not convert.
Keep the people you meet
The week after a listing, or the week without one, fails the same way. You talked to twenty people. You remember four. The useful ones were in a thread you can no longer find.
Write down who they are, the URL, what they asked, and when to look again. Do it while you are still on the page. Tracking outreach from public conversations is the habit. The launch is just that habit, repeated.
When Product Hunt is still worth it
Do a Product Hunt day when you have a reason beyond "launches happen there":
- You want makers as customers, and they actually browse it.
- You already have conversations to point at, so the comments are not your first talks.
- You can spend the day in the thread, not just the morning of the post.
Founder CRM still helps on that day. It grew from finding Product Hunt makers, following them to X, and trying not to lose the follow-up. Use it either way: with a listing, or without one.
A CRM for that week
Founder CRM is a free Chrome extension for the conversations a launch is made of. Describe who you want. It opens X, Product Hunt and Reddit in your own browser, keeps the people who fit, and reminds you when someone is due. You write every message.
There is no account. Chrome Web Store approval is coming soon. Install Founder CRM from the install page if you want it today.
Questions founders ask
- Do I need Product Hunt to launch?
- No. A launch is conversations with people who have the problem. A listing day is optional.
- Is this anti Product Hunt?
- No. Product Hunt is useful when makers are your customer and you can stay in the thread. It is not the only way to start.
- What should I do instead of a listing day?
- Find people already asking, reply like a person, keep the names, and follow up. Repeat for a few weeks.
- Does Founder CRM post for me?
- No. It finds people and reminds you. You type every comment and every message.
